USKIS Saint Piran Rider competes in the Australian National Championships 2024

Rhys Robotham, from the USKIS Saint Piran Development Team recently competed in the Men’s Australian National Criterium and Men’s National Road Race Championships. This is what Rhys had to say about it.

“Commencing the Aussie cycling season at nationals in Ballarat is a tradition. This marks my second year in the elite field, engaging in both the national crit and road race. After a successful campaign last year, the anticipation for another strong performance was high.

Despite being more attuned to mountains, the crit provided a chance to ease pre-race nerves. Although I hoped to initiate an early break, the presence of Caleb Ewan and his team posed a formidable challenge. What began as an attacking first half transitioned into a controlled bunch finish, securing a 16th place.

The road race, spanning a wet 180km with 16 ascents of Mt Bunningyong, offered another opportunity. The strategy was to stay at the forefront for as long as possible. Early on, it was evident that the race would be fiercely contested, with Greenedge boasting the largest team and being pre-race favorites. All went according to plan until Harper and Plapp surged ahead, establishing a 6-minute advantage. The remainder of my race involved strategic moves and seizing opportunities. Finishing 15th, among only 5 non-professionals to complete the race, is a source of pride and sets a positive tone for the rest of the season.”
